North Korea may have executed the officer in charge of nuclear facility construction over a delay in a weapons test and the collapse of a tunnel in Punggye-ri, Hampyung Province, Asahi Shimbun reported Tuesday.

The Japanese daily quoted an unnamed source as saying the sixth nuclear test was originally scheduled for the spring, but was postponed to September due to the tunnel construction delay.

The executed officer was head of North Korea's 131 Training Unit Guidance Bureau (TUGB), which is responsible for building major military facilities such as the tunnel in Punggye-ri and the missile launch site in Dongchang-ri.

Asahi reported that Hwang Byong-seo, North Korea's former director-general of the General Political Bureau, may also have been executed. Hwang was recently demoted.

He would be the highest ranking official to be executed after Kim Jong-un had his uncle Jang Seong-taek killed in 2013.
