7 Graves Devoted to Food Pioneers

Visitors wandering around Pere-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris may encounter what appears to be a curious case of vandalism: a grave covered in potatoes. It’s actually a tribute to the man buried below, Antoine-Augustin Parmentier, the potato promoter who popularized the tuber across Europe.

While most cemetery tours highlight politicians or decorated generals, if you know where to look, you can find fascinating memorials devoted to history’s greatest patrons of food and drink. From Colonel Sanders to the creator of the Coney Island hot dog, here are seven graves where you can pay your respects—and maybe even leave a potato or two.
